Acne is an inflammatory skin condition. Acne comes in different stages:
(1) Initially, the skin becomes red with node under the skin, accompanied by pain. If untreated, these conditions can last for weeks, or even months.
(2) Then the redness is overcome by dark pigment cells. These dark spots at former acne sites may persist for months or even years, resulting in acne scars.
(3) If inflammation is severe, tight scar tissues may form around the former acne sites, pulling the skin downward, and thus forming permanent pitting scars.
Unfortunately, acne scars may stubbornly stay on your skin for a long period of time -- especially if you have fair skin.
Remember the following:
(1) The deeper the acne cyst is, the longer the redness stays, and the more damaging it is to the skin.
(2) The darker your skin type is, the longer the redness will persist, eventually forming dark spots.
(3) The older you are, the longer the redness will linger on your skin.
Acne is an inflammatory condition that has to run its course.
At the onset of acne, use vascular lasers to interrupt the blood supply, thereby interrupting the inflammatory process and avoiding the formation of pitting scars. However, vascular lasers may be dangerous and unsuitable for individuals with dark skin. The reason is that vascular lasers may target not just the infected area, but also the background, thereby changing the skin color of and around the infected area by making it lighter in contrast to the rest of the skin. In addition, vascular lasers are expensive as well as uncomfortable procedures.
Another way of dealing with acne scars is using soft tissue augmentation, which involves filling pitting scars with your own body fat from another part of your body. The drawback of this "fat-grafting" procedure is that it has to be repeated every now and then.
The best remedy is to stop acne at the initial inflammatory stage through good skin care, personal hygiene, and an anti-inflammatory diet that prevents the outbreak of acne.
